We all know the famous words sung by Bob Marley, but how many of you have put this to the test. Now I know, there is music out there that preys on the sadder side of the emotion spectrum. Also, I realize these types of songs may tend to remind us of painful memories. These memories could be so sad it feels like it hurts; but as you sit there and bawl your eyes out, while you sing along at the top of your lungs, it miraculously starts to feel better. It helps you cope with the emotion and eventually starts to heal it.
I am also well aware that there is music out there that we as individual musical consumers do not appreciate. That anti-appreciation may make it feel like it is hurting out ears or head, however, that is some other persons magic healing potion. When it hits them, they can get through anything.
Music is one of the few things that can cure, assist, and inspire us all in 3 to 7 minutes. I mean think about it! What songs do you play while you run on a track, max out on the bench press, or push through that hour-long cardio class? What serenades you through the all night study sessions, during yard work in the 100-degree weather or in the car and office of a 40-hour work week?
Music surrounds our lives and fills them with melodic tones that can sooth even the craziest of souls. Even Hitler would kick back and relax with the sounds of Germanic classical composers of the era. Music means something different to every single person. This is what makes something so universal, individual to the self. Certain types of music can grant an individual solitude in times of trouble, it can comfort them in their time of need, or it can take them to another place when their whole world is crumbling down.
The inter-personal relationship that we choose for ourselves can often times define us and hold influence on our everyday life. Speaking from personal experience; a Brandon Boyd lyric ,that had me convinced I would not live past 23, influenced me to live my younger life in a very different way than most. Once I hit 24, my mind was boggled that this lyric, that had meant so much to me, had no control over my life anymore. At first, I felt a sense of confusion and a minor loss of identity. Eventually, it turned into the motivation to get back in school and plan for the future that i needed. Even to this day i am amazed at how much that lyric has influenced my life.
Are there any lyrics, songs or bands that you can identify in a similar way? Music can do many things to and for us if we let it. So I ask; what has music done for you lately?
